Baton Rouge news station WAFB interviewed Dr. Kevin DiBenedetto on the soaring number of flu cases being seen as the holidays come to a close and children head back to school. He says the high numbers of flu and other illnesses are due to timing, weather, and lack of testing. “Because [this flu season] started hitting before Thanksgiving,” Dr. DiBenedetto explained, “then you had Christmas, so that’s why you’re seeing such incredibly high numbers right now.”
He also says that many adults choose not to get tested when they get sick because they don’t feel their illness is serious, however he cautions everyone to get tested for the sake of those who may be immunocompromised- especially family members. He said “Sometimes people will not get tested because they’ll feel like ‘Well, it’s just a cold, I’m not worried about it.’ They’ve just got to remember who else is in the household.”
Well done to Dr. DiBenedetto for making sure everyone has the information they need to make smart decisions about their health. To watch the full interview, click here.
